Sports Science

Undergraduate Pathway in Sports Science

Birmingham City University (BCU) boasts partnerships with several sports clubs – such as Sutton Coldfield Hockey Club and Luton Town FC – providing plenty of industry exposure.

The world-class Alexander Stadium, host of the Commonwealth Games in 2022, is now home to BCU’s Sports and Exercise courses.

Enjoy high-spec on-campus facilities, including a biomechanics laboratory with motion capture equipment and an Alter G antigravity treadmill.

BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science

This course, accredited by the British Association for Sport and Exercise Science (BASES), explores the science of sport and exercise. You will learn how nutrition, physiology, psychology, and biomechanics can be applied to sports performance, physical activity, health, and wellbeing.

BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Physical Education

This degree will teach you how to coach athletes across a range of ages and abilities. You will put your skills and knowledge into practice by completing work placements and gaining first-hand experience in a coaching and/or school environment.

Programme Details

Foundation Modules

Interactive Learning Skills and Communication

Throughout this module, you will learn the academic skills needed for success at a UK university, such as:

  • Time management
  • Public speaking techniques
  • Appropriate language styles
  • Professional communication and presentation
  • Researching and referencing techniques.

Business Studies

You will learn to define what a business is and its functions in relation to the different types of business costs. You will also be introduced to marketing, the marketing mix and product life cycle.

ICT Skills

This module will introduce you to the concepts of ICT skills, including applications and reporting mechanisms.

Numerical Techniques 1

This module will introduce you to basic mathematics and mathematical applications – including equations, algebraic problems and trigonometry.

Physics 1

This module defines the basic laws of physics. You will learn how to describe the fundamentals of mechanics and thermofluid mechanics.

Design Concepts

This module will introduce you to design, the importance of design and the fundamentals of technical drawing.

Biology 1

This module covers some of the fundamental aspects of biology, including:

  • The principles of homeostasis and how this is regulated
  • The principles of nutrition, enzymatic digestion and absorption
  • The physiology of blood and the circulatory system.

Biology 2

This module explores further aspects of biology, including the rules of biological classification, evolution by natural selection and the concept of species.

International Year One Modules

You will be studying BCU modules together with direct BCU students. For information on the modules, check the BCU course page for your chosen degree.

In addition to the BCU modules, you will study Interactive Learning Skills and Communication with BCUIC.
