Foundation Modules

Interactive Learning Skills and Communication

Throughout this module, you will learn the academic skills needed for success at a UK university, such as:

  • Time management
  • Public speaking techniques
  • Appropriate language styles
  • Professional communication and presentation
  • Researching and referencing techniques.

Business Studies*

You will learn to define what a business is and its functions in relation to the different types of business costs. You will also be introduced to marketing, the marketing mix and product life cycle.

Critical Thinking

You will be introduced to the fundamentals of critical thinking. You will learn how to examine and comment on components of an argument, so that you can develop a structured and analytical response.

Composition and Style*

This module will define the core principles of effective academic writing, including:

  • How to argue a position coherently and appropriately
  • Distinguishing between descriptive and analytic writing
  • Identifying academic systems of researching and referencing.

Accounting*

This module will introduce you to basic accounting and finance, as well as accounting definitions, calculations and costings.

Business Mathematics*

You will be introduced to basic arithmetic, and the application of mathematics to real-life problems in the business and everyday world.

ICT Skills

This module will introduce you to the concepts of ICT skills, including applications and reporting mechanisms.

Globalisation

You will explore how the concept of globalisation has evolved, looking at:

  • The economic, political, technological and social forces involved
  • Local/regional beliefs that become global.

International Year One Modules - Accounting

Introduction to Financial Accounting

This module covers in depth the recording, processing and reporting of business transactions and events. You will learn and use the system of double entry, as well as gain an understanding of other concepts of accrual accounting. You will learn how to draft simple financial statements for sole proprietors.

Introduction to Management Accounting

This module will introduce you to the use of management accounting techniques to support management in their planning, controlling and decision-making. You will learn how costs behave and why this behaviour is important, before moving on to budgeting.

Governance, Ethics and Law

The module will cover the fundamental principles of ethics and ethical conflict, giving you practical examples that will develop your understanding of the differing frameworks, values and attitudes. Businesses are also governed by legal framework, and this module will examine the key elements of the English legal system, company law, contract law and employment law.

Professional Skills in Accounting

This module aims to develop the types of competencies that organisations are looking for in their employees, set in the context of accounting. It also provides awareness of the role of an Accountant in business, and the key decisions that you will need to make within this role.

Data Intelligence

This module will familiarise you with both the technical and practical skills required by Accountants, Financiers and Economists when endeavouring to manage Big Data. There will be a focus on the theory and practice of data using business and financial dashboards and creating reports using the appropriate mathematical techniques to inform decision-making.

Introduction to Economics and Finance

This module is designed to develop your fundamental knowledge and understanding of economic theory, basic finance and the financial world within which businesses operate. You will explore basic economic concepts and models that can be used to explain and predict the behaviour of various businesses, consumers, markets and national economies.

International Year One Modules – Economics

Principles of Economics

This module offers a firm theoretical foundation in economic theory at an introductory level. You will learn about the basic economic concepts and models that can be used to explain and predict the behaviour of various businesses, consumers, markets and national economies.

Applied Economics

You will learn how to apply your knowledge and understanding of economic theory to analyse real-world economic problems. During this analytical module, you will evaluate and compare the usefulness of different economic models.

Economic History

This module will introduce you to the history of humanity and civilisation, which starts with the evolution of the economy. Alongside this study of the past, this module will make explicit links to today’s events and problems.

Professional Development for Economists

You will be introduced to the discipline of economics, the range of careers that are open to graduates from this discipline, as well as the key employability skills valued by employers.
