Undergraduate Pathway in Nursing – Adult

Degrees are accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), so you will be able to apply for Registered Nurse Status on completion.

You will spend half your time each year on placement in different hospital and clinical settings, allowing you to engage continuously with practice partners and service users. Placements will be available across University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust – one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England.

On campus, you will learn in a modern environment complete with mock hospital wards and simulation manikins, allowing you to practise your skills throughout your studies.

Nursing and Midwifery Facilities at BCU

Progression Degrees

BSc (Hons) Nursing - Adult

You will explore all fields of nursing during this degree to develop your skills in supporting a patient throughout their lifespan. In the final year, your modules will focus on adult nursing. As you progress, you will grow as a leader who uses research-informed critical thinking to co-ordinate care, supervise other health professionals and gain confidence in the safe management of medication.

One-Semester Foundation

Interactive Learning Skills and Communication

Throughout this module, you will learn the academic skills needed for success at a UK university, such as:

  • Time management
  • Public speaking techniques
  • Appropriate language styles
  • Professional communication and presentation
  • Researching and referencing techniques.

Numerical Techniques 2

This module covers a variety of numerical techniques associated with basic number theory, including:

  • Cartesian coordinates
  • Indices
  • Logarithms
  • Polynomial, quadratic and simultaneous equations
  • Geometric progressions.

Biology 2

This module explores further aspects of biology, including the rules of biological classification, evolution by natural selection and the concept of species.

Preparation for Career in Health Care

This module is all about understanding the professional roles available in the UK’s health and social care sector. You will learn about the ethics involved in working with a range of people and securing suitable experience within your chosen profession.

Two-Semester Foundation

Semester 1

Interactive Learning Skills and Communication

Throughout this module, you will learn the academic skills needed for success at a UK university, such as:

  • Time management
  • Public speaking techniques
  • Appropriate language styles
  • Professional communication and presentation
  • Researching and referencing techniques.

Numerical Techniques 1

This module will introduce you to basic mathematics and mathematical applications – including equations, algebraic problems and trigonometry.

Biology 1

This module covers some of the fundamental aspects of biology, including:

  • The principles of homeostasis and how this is regulated
  • The principles of nutrition, enzymatic digestion and absorption
  • The physiology of blood and the circulatory system.

Critical Thinking

You will be introduced to the fundamentals of critical thinking. You will learn how to examine and comment on components of an argument, so that you can develop a structured and analytical response.

Semester 2

Composition and Style

This module will define the core principles of effective academic writing, including:

  • How to argue a position coherently and appropriately
  • Distinguishing between descriptive and analytic writing
  • Identifying academic systems of researching and referencing.

ICT Skills

This module will introduce you to the concepts of ICT skills, including applications and reporting mechanisms.

Biology 2

This module explores further aspects of biology, including the rules of biological classification, evolution by natural selection and the concept of species.

Three-Semester Foundation

Semester 1

Academic English

This module focuses on speaking and listening, reading and vocabulary, writing and grammar, and academic writing. The aim is to build your confidence in communication.

Numeracy Skills

You will gain basic skills in counting, solving number problems, measuring, estimating, sorting, noticing patterns, and adding and subtracting numbers.

Study Skills

This module will teach you how to effectively absorb, comprehend, process, and retain information within a learning context. You will learn strategies and techniques to enhance your learning capacity to succeed in higher education. Topics will include: avoiding plagiarism, managing your time, reading, note taking, referencing and revision.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • AS/A-level with minimum 36 UCAS points or 5 GCSE subjects in grade C/4 or above
  • GCSE maths or physics or statistic with grade C or above
  • A Criminal Record Check OR a letter of good conduct from the local authorities in your home country before an unconditional offer can be issued.
